More About Tobin
Philosophy & Framing the Sound Experience Practice:
Tobin sees everything he does as an experiment informed by study and inspiration, always with the acknowledgment that there are deeper levels of awareness and understanding.
There is a growing body of research on the benefits of working with sound. It can help to calm the nervous system, assist in creating more internal spaciousness to process intense experiences, facilitate quieting the mind, and support access to meditative states. While sound is universal and vibration is fundamental to existence, one’s relationship with sound is deeply personal. Tobin encourages you to engage with the process directly to explore how sound affects you.
Background:
Voice, music, and sound have always been a part of Tobin’s life. As a child, his dad would drive him around playing opera to help him fall asleep. He lived in Vermont from ages two to ten before moving to New York City, where he sang in the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus and later studied theater and performance at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
With a desire to expand his horizons and leave a positive impact, Tobin took a multidisciplinary approach to his studies at Stanford University, weaving together psychology, communication, journalism, and computer science. He went on to work for five years at the university’s virtual reality research lab. While that path satisfied his mind, his heart and spirit urged him to keep seeking.
In 2017, Tobin began exploring how voice and sound can act as portal ways into self-exploration, deep relaxation, and altered perceptual states. Since then, he has trained, collaborated, and studied with vocalists and facilitators from a wide range of traditions around the world, and has mentored close to 200 students across immersive training retreats.
After living semi-nomadically from 2021 to 2025, Tobin is pleased to be back in the Upper Valley.
